New cooperative programme on Mycorrhiza between Tunisia and Sweden

2006-07-17 16:26:23

The main objective is to investigate to what extent the establishment of plant cover and plant growth can be improved in eroded and low-fertile areas in Tunisia, including saline and dryland ecosystems.

Different forms of organic matter will be added to the soil and the influence on mycorrhizal colonization, survival and growth of plants will be studied.

The results will improve our understanding of how mycorrhizal fungi respond to organic matter addition in extreme ecosystems. This will be of large importance for sustainable and productive management of such areas since we can learn how to stimulate beneficial effects of mycorrhiza on plant growth. These experiments will be performed in i) natural salinity gradients in Tunisia which have been planted with various plants with different tolerance to salinity, and ii) in dryland sites irrigated with saline water. The aim is to find suitable plants and suitable management practices to improve biomass production and soil stability of arid and semiarid soils affected by salinity.
